Museum of Te Wairoa
Te Whare Taonga
The museum is home to a collection of European and Maori objects and artifacts that have been excavated from the post-eruption ruins of Te Wairoa. It is also home to a large photographic collection including many stunning images of the Pink and White Terraces.
Since 1886
From many decades of excavation, items have been added to our displays to give visitors a unique view of the time leading up to the eruption and allow you to feel how that fateful night in 1886 changed lives and the landscape forever.
A Record of History
Displays in the museum are designed around themes that record significant periods of history in the Tarawera area. Absorb the history of early Māori settlement, European arrival, and Te Wairoa as the Birthplace of New Zealand tourism. Learn about the warning signs of the impending disaster, the events that unfolded during the devastating eruption, and the lasting effects on the people and land.
When you combine the informational aspect of the museum visit with the up-close and personal archaeological walk, the Buried Village of Te Wairoa will leave a lasting effect on the viewer.
