The Buried Village experience consists of three parts:
Please allow 2 hours minimum; however, the duration may be longer if students are involved with task completion activities. You are welcome to bring lunch to have out in the grounds or in our cafe area.
A guided talk can be customized to meet your class's learning intentions or could be based around diving in a little deeper into your class's interests. Relevant areas include; Early Māori settlement in the Rotorua Lakes District, New Zealand Tourism (early and current), Volcanoes and Geology, Effects of Natural disasters, the Pink and White Terraces and Sustainability.
For the safety and comfort of students we recommend that groups be made up of a maximum of 30 students per group. We rely on the adult/pupil ratio set by individual school boards to be adhered to; however teachers should be aware of the water hazards while planning school visits. Te Wairoa Stream is 0.5 metres deep and the Te Wairoa Falls is 30 metres.
If groups are larger than 30, we suggest staggering the groups. Where group A starts at the Museum of Te Wairoa and finishes with the Waterfall Trail. Where group B starts at the Archaeological Site and finishes with the Museum of Te Wairoa.
For school rates, please get in touch by filling out the form below. We can provide a range of educational resources to visiting school groups.
If you have a question please contact us and we will be more than happy to answer it for you.
The whole visit takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. The outside walk is about 1.5 km and is predominately flat with the option of the waterfall walk at the end.
The Buried Village is located a scenic 15 minutes drive from Rotorua. Head out of town and along Tarawera Road. Along the way you will see the Blue and Green Lakes - two of the gems of the Rotorua Lakes region
Yes, we have a great cafe on site. Smith & Co cafe sells a great range of hot and cold cabinet-style food as well as hot and cold beverages.
The Pink and White Terraces were situated on Lake Rotomahana approximately 17 kilometres from Te Wairoa. Unfortunately they are not there anymore. You can see photos of them here and learn a lot more about them.
At the Buried Village you can learn about the 1886 Tarawera Eruption and its effects on the people and land of Te Wairoa. We have an excellent Museum and Excavated Village walk as well as a stunning Stream and Waterfall walk.
